The final proposals of the call for national manufacturers of electric pedal-assisted bicycles for distribution (cargo-bike type) and light electric utility vehicles (tricycles type) were chosen. In Assisted Pedaling Electric Bicycles (BEUPA), the following companies were selected: Cargo Bike, We Flow, Wheele and Lasilasol. While on tricycles or Electric Utility Vehicle (VEU): Kite Mobility and Novas.

This call seeks to encourage the generation of local capacity in the manufacturing of electric vehicles for delivery and its subsequent promotion as a sustainable technological solution for urban cargo transport and last-mile logistics.

It is an opportunity that arises from the joint collaboration between the MOVÉS project and the SOLUTIONSplus project, a consortium of 46 partners that includes highly committed cities, research centers, industry partners, city networks and United Nations organizations (UN -Habitat and UNEP).

The aim of SOLUTIONSplus is to establish a global platform for electric mobility solutions and initiate the transition to low-carbon urban mobility. One of the main components of the project is the implementation of pilots in 9 cities in different regions of the world to test innovative and integrated electric mobility solutions, complemented by a wide range of tools, capacity building and replication activities.

Montevideo was one of the two Latin American cities that were selected for the implementation of pilots, which are coordinated at the regional level by the Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment and Energy (WI) and the Urban Electric Mobility Initiative (UEMI), coordinating entity from SOLUTIONSplus.

In this context, MOVÉS was chosen in the call for “Local Innovators” with funds from UN Habitat to generate a program that promotes the manufacture and use of sustainable vehicles in last-mile logistics, and for this purpose it organized this call.

The jury, made up of members of IDIADA, Zaragoza Logistic Center, UN Environment and MOVÉS, evaluated the proposals presented taking into account the following concepts: the convenience and technical solvency of the proposal, the safety parameters and the versatility of the proposed vehicles, the company’s background, and the production capacity.

All the proposals submitted complied with the minimum score, and according to each qualification, the quotas were granted. In Assisted Pedaling Electric Bicycles (BEUPA), the following companies were selected: Cargo Bike, We Flow, Wheele and Lasilasol. While on tricycles or Electric Utility Vehicle (VEU): Kite Mobility and Novas.

The MOVÉS project is funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF). Its implementing agency is the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and is executed by the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Mining (MIEM), the Ministry of the Environment (MA) and the Ministry of Housing and Territorial Planning (MVOT), with the collaboration of the Uruguayan Agency for International Cooperation (AUCI).
